Vincent Price, John Carrradine and Donald Pleasance round out half of what was supposed to be an assemblage of the 6 gentlemen of classic horror. Still, we get an anthology of three spooky tales spooky, sad, and funny, surrounded by a quirky wraparound story and three surprisingly catchy interstitial rock tunes. At the same time they were writing the soon-to-be-hit-film, A Quiet Place, writer/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were toiling away on this nasty thriller. Evocative of movies like Hostel and Saw, it’s no surprise that Eli Roth decided to nurture and produce Haunt. We’re looking forward to more horror in the future from this duo.

Not that it doesn’t TRY to be funny. With an all-star cast helmed by Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley Jr., and a super-sexy Gina Davis, it should’ve worked at some level. But maybe the Du Pont Chemical Corporation just isn’t cut out to produce films after all. Anyway, even if the laughs are groaners and come from the least-intended places, you could do worse for Halloween. We tend to appreciate this kind of Universal-movie-monster stuff this time of year a little better. Thanks, Vincent, for the request!
A gritty and not so great horror anthology redeems itself by the end, propelling its director straight into a career in filmmaking, and potentially bringing us a new horror icon to rival Jason and Freddy. Happy Halloween everyone!
This is Jim Carrey’s big breakthrough – his first starring role as a frustrated teenage virgin who can’t get his girlfriend to give it up, so he turns to a female vampire instead and gets more than he bargained for. It’s goofy as hell and 80’s through-and-through, which means we more or less loved it.
